Based on the experiences of French writer-director Mia Hansen-Løve’s brother (and co-writer) Sven, Eden (2014) takes as its subject the rise in popularity of the rave scene in the early 1990s, a scene of which Sven was one of the pioneering DJs working both in France and on the international circuit.
Feélix de Givry stars as Paul, a teenager entrenched in the dance music scene of Paris of the early-nineties, where raves dominate and partying is a necessity. Paul, however, is drawn more to the soulful rhythms of Chicago’s garages house scene, and – along with a small group of friends – forms a group and plunges into the international circuit, shunning his personal responsibilities for a community grounded on ceaseless beats and bass.
It isn’t until those around him begin to settle down and go on with their lives that Paul realises he may have strayed too far into an unknowable void.
Eden was shot in Paris, New York and Chicago, and features music from Daft Punk, Joe Smooth, Frankie Knuckles, MK and Terry Hunter.
